In the wake of this semester’s imminent lineage-matching process, we felt it appropriate to reflect on the importance of YUCG lineages to some of our members. The matching process—where each new analyst is matched with an older YUCG member and thereby joins their lineage—is an important aspect of cross-class bonding and a mentor for younger members to learn from. Atharv Joshi, one of YUCG’s Heads of Consulting, who has had the opportunity to be both a “big” and a “little,” reflects on his lineage experience:

“I think having a big within my first few months was quite important for my adjustment to Yale, especially given that my big and I hit it off immediately during formal dinner. I stay in touch with Chiraag to this day and he’s always there when I need him. Being a big is a completely different experience. I think the notion of “being a big” implies this one-way mentorship role, but I still find myself learning a lot from my littles: Hiya is driven to an exceptional degree, and Ollie has intellectual vitality that I think is ironically rare at Yale.”

Atharv’s experience highlights the reciprocal nature of these relationships, and through his reflection, it is clear how YUCG lineages can be transformative both for “bigs” and “littles.”

For Dvita, who joined YUCG as an analyst in Fall 2025, that connection has become a regular part of her life at Yale. She shared that “[she has] loved having Michelle as [her] big for the past year. We get dinner all the time and she's been a great source of advice for academic and personal questions.”

Pat Dempsey echoed this appreciation for his own lineage:

“The lineage system in YUCG has given me some of my best friendships in the club, not just in my own lineage but also through getting to meet people in other lineages and expand my community.”

We’re excited to welcome our new analysts into these families and see the friendships they build within YUCG!
